Hi all,

We have a refreshed board of directors, some new officer arrangements, and
our ever-popular Short But Cool/short topics meeting coming in just over
two weeks. You'll also find some quick notes at the end.

We're always looking for your suggestions, about emails, meeting topics,
member benefits, etc. Send them to blw at baylisa.org or just write back to
me directly. (Don't need to group reply, of course.)

===>	NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Scott Strobele has joined the board of BayLISA. Re-elected for a two-year
term were Rob Markovic, Rick Moen, Heather Stern, and Guy B. Purcell,
joining Robert Novak who's in the middle of his two year term.

We thank Robert Harker again for his service to BayLISA, and wish him well
as he moves into leadership roles with other organizations.

===>	NEW OFFICERS FOR BAYLISA

At the BayLISA board meeting November 28, the board elected Robert Novak
to serve as President and Secretary, and Guy B. Purcell to serve as
Treasurer, for the next year.

We are grateful for the service of Rob Markovic as President and Rick Moen
as Treasurer for the past year, and look forward to their continued
contributions to the organization.

===>	DECEMBER SHORT-BUT-COOL-MEETING

Third, we are pleased to announce our twice-yearly Short But Cool meeting,
a festival of pizza, beverages, live system administration demonstrations,
and short talks that you'll be looking forward to trying out after you
recover from New Year's Eve.

We are welcoming short-topic speakers from LogicMonitor, a hosted
monitoring solution that really rocks for hard-to-monitor problems, and
CloudStack, an open source virtualization management platform for the
leading hypervisors.

We have room for one or two more short topics--10-15 minutes tops,
preferably with a demonstration rather than a slide deck, something that's
impressed you or made your sysadmin life easier recently, that you'd like
to share with the rest of the group. I'm thinking about giving a
demonstration of sysadmin stand-up comedy, but I'd really rather get
something less painful in front of the group. Get in touch with me if
you'd like to be on the schedule.

James T Nixon III will be back with a "keynote" presentation on PC-BSD 9.
You may remember James from June's Short But Cool FreeNAS 8 presentation;
he's a fun and informative speaker who knows what he's talking about.
Our friends at iXsystems will also be providing pizza and drinks for us,
so be sure to RSVP so we don't run out. http://bit.ly/v8S7UI

===>	BECOME A MEMBER OF BAYLISA

Want to show your support for BayLISA and its efforts for the Bay Area
sysadmin community? Become a member of BayLISA! http://bit.ly/keYnGQ

It's $45/year for individuals, and may be tax-deductible as a business
expense or expensable with your company to the extents permitted by the
IRS and your employer, respectively. Full time students may join for only
$15. We have corporate and sponsoring membership options available as
well.

In addition to supporting BayLISA, you'll get various tech discounts,
early access to event videos in the future, extra chances in our drawings
at monthly meetings, and other perks we're working on.

You can either join online, or bring a filled-out membership form with
cash or a personal check to the Treasurer at any BayLISA meeting. Forms
are usually available from the Treasurer or Secretary on the spot as well.

==>	OTHER SHORT NOTES

The Illumos User Group is having a ZFS 10th Birthday event in Menlo Park
this January. Check out the details on this January 10, 2012 event
sponsored by Delphix and Joyent at http://bit.ly/vf6A0L

Linux New Media, the folks behind Linux Pro Magazine and Admin Magazine,
have a special deal for subscribing to both magazines in print form (with
DVD/CD included), along with a Linux Shell Handbook special edition. We're
working to get some copies to give out at an upcoming BayLISA meeting (an
extra bonus to those of you who RSVP), but if you already know you want
it, the deal is at http://bit.ly/u2JBhT (you can add digital copies for a
few extra bucks if you like).

If you're going to be in Boston this month, even if you're not at LISA
itself, the Data Storage Day is free, brought to you by Cambridge
Computer (the guys with the hat logo tee shirts). See details at
http://bit.ly/vrjFL8 and you can sign up for a standalone DSD pass at
http://bit.ly/s65g1T (not necessary if you signed up with your LISA
registration).

That's all for now. Hope to see you all at the next BayLISA meeting (less
than two weeks to go!), and I wish you all a holiday break without oncall
duty (I won't be so lucky).

Robert Novak
BayLISA President
