I believe you are on the right track. Treating them fairly in the beginning will
help make your case if you need to escalate the situation. As far as
auto-replies that the email does not exists... I immediately escalate to the
provider. This typically gets a response for me as we all are anxious of the
stupid ISP's and their knee jerk reactions for possible TOS violations.
