Welcome to BayLISA, the Bay Area Large Installation System Administrators

What is BayLISA?

One way to put it that there are many user groups, but we're the sysadmins group... The Bay Area Large Installation Systems Administrators includes system and network administrators across a range of skill levels. BayLISA meets monthly to discuss topics of interest to administrators and managers of sites supporting more than 100 users and/or computers. The meetings are free and open to the public. The focus is generally on UNIX Systems, but non-UNIX issues are also topics of occasional discussion.

BayLISA grew out of an after-hours discussion among attendees of the USENIX LISA IV conference. The idea was to provide a forum for Sysadmin professionals in the San Francisco Bay area to get together and exchange ideas, hear speakers address topics of interest and most importantly, socialize.

BayLISA has an attending membership of approximately 60 individuals. While our members are mostly from the Bay area, we also have out-of-state members. We have even received inquiries from as far away as Scotland, Chile and Russia! The seven member board of directors are all from the Bay area. Board members are elected for two year terms each November, about half of them being up for re-election in a given year.

What is a BayLISA Meeting Like?

Our monthly meetings follow a set format: we start with an Open Floor session which serves as a chance to announce job openings, availability for jobs, upcoming tutorials, consulting services available and the search for shared problems and solutions. Next, the evening's speaker makes their presentation. Finally, the group generally goes to a local watering hole for refreshments.

Topics and guest speakers featured in the past include:

Cricket Liu, Co-Author of the DNS and BIND Nutshell book
Dan Farmer discussing security tools
Eric Allman, author of Sendmail
Bill Howell on managing your manager
Amy Kreiling on HTML and the World Wide Web
Larry Wall, author of Perl
Rich Salz speaking on DCE

Why Join BayLISA?

While BayLISA's monthly meetings are open to the general public, we do incur expenses getting speakers from out of the area to address our group. Also, guest speakers are traditionally presented with some sort of fun speaker-gift as a token of our appreciation.

All of BayLISA's monthly meetings are recorded on videotape and placed in the BayLISA video library. Membership in the group entitles you to borrow any of the tapes from the library to refresh your memory, or bring you up to date on any of the meetings you may have missed. If you've always wanted to hear Larry Wall play the violin, this is one of the few ways you'll be able to!

The BayLISA mailing list is accessible to all BayLISA members for the same purposes as our monthly open forum: problem solving, job searching, etc. We give you the option not to be on the list if you prefer anonymity.

Membership entitles you to a vote in the annual election, and also entitles you to run for the Board of Directors.

On top of this, there's also the annual BayLISA picnic which presents a unique opportunity for members to meet in a much less formal environment and share horror stories and non-job-related conversation, as well as good food. We may occasionally host other special events as well.

Your BayLISA membership fee helps to cover these expenses.
